I'm pretty sure you would be pissed off and ready to quit. That's how bartenders and servers all over the world feel when people don't tip like they should.
In the Service Industry most employees commission is called gratuity. For those that don't know, gratuity is a tip or any appreciation directed to the one who served you. 99% of the time, the gratuity is displayed in currency. Sometimes, tickets, passes, jewelry, etc... Whatever the case, the server can judge your level of appreciation or your lack there of by your level of gratuity. The gratuity percentage back in the day was 15%, which basically translates to $15 on every $100. It is now 18%, but most people just round up to 20%. Of course, you can definitely go higher, but that is the basic expected tip around the country for anyone worth their salt.
Now, in certain areas of the globe where the check average is very low, more than 20% gratuity is expected. Your saving a good bit of money on food and drink, so show your appreciation and tip your server well.
In other areas where check averages are extremely high, the gratuity is still 18% plus. If you know your going to an expensive restaurant and your about to spend a grip, why would you not include the server or bartender. Then at the end of the visit you want to tip $5 on $100 and act like you did them a favor.
The taxes on that $5 on $100 for the server can be as high as 7%, which means the server literally lost $2 just serving you. What a waste of time.
Then there's the people who start looking for something to complain about so they will get free food and drinks. In some instances it may just be warranted, but after getting free food or drink they want to tip $2 because they don't have a check.
Listen, what ever the total should have been with all the freebies is what you base your tip on. Stop being so damn cheap!!! You want someone to work for you, then you don't want to pay them?
The bottom line is, people make their living from tips and gratuity, not their paychecks because the paychecks usually say "void" or all zeros. It's a lot of foot hurting, back aching, sometimes mind scrambling work. Work that you cannot fully appreciate unless you have done it yourself and then you would be tipping 30% to 70%.
Plan on tipping well, you really don't want to be the one that everyone in the industry calls the cheap bastard and no one wants to serve. WJS - WE'RE JUST SAYING!!!!!
